LUCA DE MARCH

Princes or princesses, goods or bad friends or enemies, it doesn't matter if you live in our society

Immigration Mood

Both your paintings and your installations deal with the issue of irony in a witty and smart/incisive way. Why did you choose the irony?

Irony is the facility through which it’s easier for me talk about serious and sensitive topics. Anyone who meets me knows I love using the irony to make the heated discussions much lighter. Irony is a universal language that we can use as we please for making our message more agreeable and accessible.

Love in the time of iPhone

The protagonists of your paintings are cartoon characters, you pick them up from their enchanted world and you set them in our ordinary contemporary society as an instrument of denunciation, highlighting some taboo dealing often with touchy subjects in order to give them a new meaning. Where do these matters come from?

What fascinates me is the fact of bothering/disturbing the communal imaginary characters to plunge them into the ocean of contemporary society’s problems. The crisis, unemployment, the spreading vices and shipwrecked love are only some of the issues that make the present a hostile place for dreamers. In this regard, the fairytale becomes a mirror of modern day society, with its unexplainable contradictions.

Question of priority

I have to ask you, what is your favourite cartoon? Why?

I think it is the Snow White, not because of the plot of the fairy tale, which is very simple and moreover it is a restatement of Grimm Brothers’ tale. I remember it was the first Disney production in ‘30s and what fascinates me is that this cartoon embodies all the main stereotypes of the traditional fable. In addition it is a fairy tale that, in its own way, contains a good dose of violence: jealousy, death, homicide, love. Well, this story lends itself well to be restated in an ironic version.

Who would you suggest to follow on Instagram and why?

Jose Lourenco (@joselourenco) is genial; his colourful artworks amuse me very much. He is a good combiner of colour and irony.

I also like Guillaume Lamaze (@zoumala), a photographer that succeeds to show surreal situations, which make to reflect.

I gladly follow Mr Brainwash (@mrbrainwash) too. With his artistic fancy and his madness, starting from the street art, he has achieved an unbelievable numbers of followers.

Many artists would be Bansky
